Enjoy a delicious meal with family and friends at a great restaurant in Springfield and support and over 70 non-profit organizations, including 13 local organizations.

The Eighth Annual Share-A-Meal with Community Shares will be held at restaurants in Springfield on Tuesday, April 12, 2011.  The event is sponsored by Community Shares of Illinois, a non-profit organization representing over 70 member charities, including 13 charities right here in Springfield.

Eleven restaurants in the Springfield area are expected to donate 15-25% of their sales on April 12th to Community Shares of Illinois and the 13 Springfield area member organizations.

Hickory Ridge Concert Series: Paul Fotsch

Hickory Ridge Concert Series will ring with the sounds of old time music from the Ozark Mountains when Paul Fotsch takes the stage Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 7:30 PM at the Dickson Mounds Museum.  Paul has been a professional performer for over 25 years touring all across North America.  With musical roots in the Ozarks and the Appalachians and reaching back through his early influences of the Kingston Trio and  Folk Revival, Paul will present a wide variety of songs and styles that will get your toes tappin’ and bring a smile to your face.  
 
Paul Fotsch, formerly Paul Grace, is best known as one of the founders of the Paul and Win Grace Family band, perennial favorites of the folk festival scene for many years.  With the girls grown and gone from the nest Paul is now hitting the road as a soloist showcasing his versatile high-energy vocal and instrumental skills on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and harmonica.  From silly songs to peppy fiddle tunes to lovely ballads, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

Indiana Family band The Frailey’s will perform at the Hickory Ridge Concert Series Saturday, May the 21st, at 7:30 pm.  The Frailey’s: Drew and Joy Frailey and their daughter Adrienne are known for their beautifully blended harmonies, solo vocals and versatility.  They present a memorable acoustic mix of old folk, country and soft rock that makes a centuries-old ballad as immediate and personal as a new cover tune.

Spring Rendezvous

At Dickson Mounds Museum on Saturday and Sunday, June 4 & 5, 2011, the Mackinaw Valley Longrifle Association will be camped for a weekend Spring Rendezvous.
 
Members of the MVL Association will be on hand throughout the day to teach visitors about the lifestyles, survival skills, and rich cultural history of Illinois 18th and 19th century inhabitants.
 
The public is invited to visit their primitive encampment at the museum’s picnic hill and engage in blanket trading and knife-hawk throwing; view demonstrations of wooden spoon carving, fiber arts, fire making with flint and steel, and more.  Admission is free.
 
MVL members will also be part of The Nature Conservancy’s Grand Opening of the Visitor Use Area at Thompson Lake off Routes 78 & 97 Saturday, June 4, 2011. Find out more ...


Hickory Ridge Concert Series: Small Potatoes

Small Potatoes is Jacquie Manning and Rich PreziosSmall potatoeso.  This Chicago-based duo has been touring on the folk circuit since 1993 and  have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Folk Festival, and Philadelphia Folk Festival.

They call themselves eclecto-maniacs.  They describe their music as "Celtic to Cowboy" and say it has taken them "years of careful indecision" to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more.  Their four recordings, "Alive!", "Waltz of the Wallflowers", "Time Flies", and "Raw" cover all these styles.  They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments.  They even yodel! Spend an afternoon learning about prehistoric and historic burial practices as the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency’s Human Skeletal Remains Protection Act Coordinator, Dawn Cobb and the Department of Natural Resources Archaeological Cultural Resource Manager, Hal Hassen illustrate these unique customs.  Changes in both cemeteries and grave markers through time represent transformations within society.  The lecture will run approximately 90 minutes in the Dickson Mounds Museum auditorium and participants must transport themselves to Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown for the second part of the program.  Please allow the entire afternoon for this program.  Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.  Bathrooms may be unavailable for an extended period of time. Dickson Mounds Museum is hosting a pioneer program for kids ages 5-12 years old on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 1:00-2:30pm.  Participants will spend the afternoon learning about pioneer times.  From chores to games and toys, participants will enjoy hands-on activities, crafts, and fun like it is the 1800s.

The cost for this program is $2 per kid.  Registration is required with a deadline of Wednesday, November 2nd.  Refreshments will be provided during a brief break.  This program is a collaborative effort between Dickson Mounds Museum, the Fulton County Arts Council, and the Spoon River Reads project.  The Fulton County Arts Council is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The Dickson Mounds Museum will be hosting a traditional Native American Winter Gathering on Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 1:00-5:00 p.m.  The Winter Gathering will feature a variety of activities and demonstrations, including storytelling, music, group games and dances, doll making, and beading.  Visitors will witness the dedication of Dorothy’s Grove, a Native American naming ceremony, and other traditional ceremonies.  Dorothy’s Grove was named in honor of Dorothy Lakota, who died in 2003 at the age of 84 and who celebrated life with compassion and action for those with few opportunities. The latest “-ism” (or movement) in art are images which we tweet and re-tweet, visually reacting to our environment.  Be a part of the “-ism” at the ISM during Old Canal Days weekend.  First, view the exhibition Fragile Relations: Art, Nature, and Environment at ISM Lockport.  Then, respond to any one (or two, or three) of the art on display by creating your own photos relating to a favorite piece that you see and post the image through ISM Lockport’s Twitter feed.  Don’t have a Twitter account, submit pics to our Facebook page or via email to the staff and they’ll add it for you.  Specific instructions will be available at the Museum.  Offered during Old Canal Days 2013.

Curators Doug Stapleton, ISM Chicago Gallery, and Jennifer Jaskowiak, ISM Lockport Gallery will introduce you to two historic Illinois artists who worked in the early 20th century:  Mary Agnes Yerkes (1886-1989) and Julius Moessel (1871-1959).   Exhibition curator Jennifer Jaskowiak will speak about the remarkable life and work of Oak Park native Mary Agnes Yerkes; most noted for her light filled paintings of the national parks and Pacific coastline.   German-born artist Julius Moessel arrived in Chicago in the late 1920s after nearly 30 years as a painter of interior architectural decoration.  Assistant Curator Doug Stapleton will talk about the many aspects of Moessel’s work as an observer of the natural world.  This event is part of our free Sunday Series for the exhibition sketches, journals, preparations.
