After the site has been selected for your prairie garden or restoration, any non-prairie plants must be removed.
On smaller plots, you can turn-up the soil to expose roots to cold temperatures or apply a short-lived herbicide. Prairie restoration projects can use these techniques, but usually on larger sites, a prairie burn is conducted. Burning will remove any vegetation that is not adapted to fire. Burns eliminate non-prairie plants while returning nutrients back to the soil quickly, making it a rich environment for planting native species. |
