Actias luna (Luna Moth)
The Luna Moth, active at night, is unmistakable for its pale green color and long tails. Each wing sports a circular spot. There is a brown margin across the front of the forewings. Wingspan is from 4 to 5 inches.
Adults emerge in spring. Females lay eggs on the host plants, which include trees of the alder, beech, hickory, and sweetgum species. Cocoons are at ground level, hidden amid leaf litter.
