Euchloe olympia (Olympia Marble)

The Olympia Marble butterfly is named for the marbled patterns on its wings. The uppersides are white with black markings and the undersides are white with a mix of yellow and black markings that look green from a distance. The wingspan is from 1.2 to 1.8 inches. The body is a dark bluish-gray.

This species lives in open woods with nearby fields of low vegetation. They prefer dry areas. In Illinois, they are found mainly in sandy sites in Kankakee and Mason counties and are scarce in other areas. Adults emerge in April or May. Females lay eggs on rockcress blossom buds. The larvae may feed on this flower's parts. The pupae overwinter.
