An Introduction to RiverWeb

Through RiverWeb, NCSA will work with numerous partners in government, education, research and business, and among river basin communities themselves, to build a lasting technology and human framework in support of environmental conservation and sustainable economic development throughout the river basin of the 21st century.

Focusing initially on projects in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota, the knowledge network we've named RiverWeb will later extend to other states within the Mississippi watershed. And, looking ahead and beyond the Mississippi basin, we hope that as RiverWeb TM evolves, it will embrace similar river basin initiatives, both in the U.S. and internationally.

With the overall vision of fostering informed discourse on environmental issues of vital concern to river basin communities, RiverWeb TM will, over time, develop or build upon the following components:

* Internet capabilities particularly via the web that enable river basin citizens and their communities to access and apply relevant data and tools and share their insights, regardless of distance

* Exhibits at museums, science and technology centers, parks, malls and other informal settings

* Community projects focused on watershed restoration and conservation that stand to benefit from information technologies

* Lifelong learning resources for K-12 and college students, citizens and their communities
