Marbled Spider (Araneus marmoreus)
The Marbled Spider has conspicuous yellow and orange markings surrounded by black or brown areas.
Description: This large spider (females 9 - 18 mm, males 6 - 9mm) has a yellow cephalothorax and abdomen mottled with dark. The legs are orange with black and white near the tips.
Habitat: This spider lives in or near woods, between branches in a vertical web. It hides itself in a woven leaf structure above the web and holds a strand of silk fastened to the center of the web (through which it can feel when prey has been caught). This species' range is all of the United States except the desert Southwest.
