Arboreal Orbweaver (Neoscona crucifera Lucas)
Description: This brown spider has subtle shades of orange and brown that form an indistinct cross on the back of the abdomen. The body is covered with short grayish hairs, and the legs are banded with darker brown. The arboreal orbweaver is one of the larger orbweavers (body length, females 8 - 20 mm; males 5 - 15 mm).
Habitat: Under natural conditions this species builds its webs in open woodlands and along brushy edges, however, it is often seen around houses where it builds its webs on porches and under the eves. This orbweaver is found throughout the eastern United States, from Massachusetts to central Florida west to the Rocky Mountains and southwest to Arizona.
