Fall into Biodiversity — Free Family Event

Fall into Biodiversity — Free Family Event

SPRINGFIELD, IL –The Illinois State Museum will present a free family event, “Fall into Biodiversity” on Saturday, September 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Families are invited to learn about how plants and animals prepare for winter through engaging activities and live-animal presentations. Visitors will learn how leaves turn colors in the fall, why some animals shed their brown coats and replace them with white for winter, how to help birds as they migrate, and much more. Activities will include designing a fall poster with leaf rubbings, creating a beautiful monarch migration mobile, playing a fun bird migration game, as well as enjoying the Museum’s exhibits.

At Noon, with a repeat program at 2:00 pm, Rob Mies from the Organization for Bat Conservation will present “Bat Encounter.” During this program, visitors will see and learn about live bats from around the world including the Malayan Flying Fox with a wingspan of almost six feet. At 1:00 pm, Wildlife Prairie State Park will present “Illinois Winter Wildlife.” Families will be introduced to animals that live at the park and learn about how their wild cousins prepare for the long winter months. These programs will take place in the Museum’s Thorne Deuel Auditorium.

“Fall into Biodiversity” is part of the Illinois State Museum’s Educational Series which is generously sponsored by Bank of Springfield. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call Elizabeth Bazan at (217) 782-5993.
