Dickson Mounds to Hold Kid's Day - Drum Circle

Dickson Mounds to Hold Kid's Day - Drum Circle

Dickson Mounds Museum will host Kid‘s Day-Drum Circle and American Heritage Music, presented by Paula Helle, Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m.

Helle will be facilitating a drum circle for youth and young at heart, emphasizing the community of drumming and how it relates to the "rhythm of life" in society at large. Isolating beats, syncopation, improvisation, accompaniment vs. solo performance will be addressed as well. Participants may enjoy making their own instrument to use during the program.

There will be a limited number of drums and rhythm instruments available for use. Participants are encouraged to bring their own hand drum, bongos or rhythm instruments if they have them, but it is not necessary as there will be singing and body rhythms incorporated into the activities. Kids may enjoy making their own instruments to use as part of the program and to take home.

Helle is a Fulton County native who is currently in her 31st year of serving as a public school educator. For the past 18 years she has worked for District 205 in Galesburg, where she serves as the high school choral director. In addition, she has also taught world drumming and class piano.

Helle is active in the Historical Ellisville Restoration Organization (H.E.R.O.) where she founded the Spoon River Rascals Theatre Troupe, a youth musical theater organization that has been performing at the Ellisville Opera House since 2003.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. This program is sponsored by the Illinois State Museum-Dickson Mounds and the Fulton County Arts Council, which is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The Illinois State Museum-Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations. For more information, call 309-547-3721 or TTY 217-782-9175 or visit the museum‘s web site at www.dicksonmounds.com.
