Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figuration - ISM Springfield
Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figuration
Figurism brings together historical and contemporary body-based art from the Illinois State Museum's collection. Never portrayed "for its own sake," the body tells stories, incites emotions, represents states of being, speaks allegorically, and comments on the conditions of contemporary life. These artworks were selected to create a better understanding and consideration of different representational styles and the ability of the figure to carry feeling, memory, and experience. They were also selected with an eye toward something fantastic-a heightened sense of the super-real or super-natural-whether through aggressive, expressive form, high-keyed color, inventive graphics, or ambiguous situations. This exhibition, with works from fifty outstanding artists, reflects the richness of figurative art--academic, modern and contemporary, realistic and abstract--and everything between. Exhibition runs from September 28 through March 2, 2014.
Figurism Opening Reception October 3 Members of the Illinois State Museum Society are invited to a special reception celebrating the opening of Figurism.
