Some
artists working in the Federal Art Project took the opportunity to
experiment with abstract
and surrealistic
imagery.
Artists
who had seen the work of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Henri
Matisse in the 1913
Armory Show of modernist
art could now explore how new ideas in art might inspire their work
with a modern sensibility or feeling.
While
most Illinois artists chose not to emulate the abstraction of Picasso,
some experimented with the dreamlike qualities of surrealism.
