Genus Strophitus

Class Bivalvia : Subclass Paleoheterodonta : Genus Strophitus

Strophitus undulatus (Squawfoot)
The squawfoot mussel shell thickens as it grows (up to four inches in length). Its shape is elliptical with bluntly rounded ends. The surface is a smooth and shiny dark brown in adults. This species lives in the mud, sand, or gravel of small to medium-sized streams (and sometimes large rivers). It has occurred in all of Illinois.
Conservation status: common and widespread
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida; Superfamily Unionoidea; Family Unionidae; Subfamily Anodontinae
