Ligumia recta (Black Sandshell)
The black sandshell mussel has an elongate shell that is pointed at the posterior end. The surface is smooth, shiny, and dark green to brown or black, sometimes with visible rays, as in this specimen. This species lives in the gravel or firm sand of medium to large rivers, usually in shallow areas where there are faster currents (riffles or raceways). It has occured throughout Illinois.
