Lasmigona compressa (Creek heelsplitter)
The creek heelsplitter mussel shell is relatively small (up to four inches in length), thin, elongate, and compressed. The smooth surface is yellowish brown with green rays; shell becomes darker with age. This species lives in the fine gravel or sand of creeks and headwaters of small to medium rivers. In Illinois it has occurred in the northern half of the state.
Conservation status: widespread but uncommon
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida; Superfamily Unionidea; Family Unionidae; Subfamily Anodontinae
