Epioblasma triquetra (Snuffbox)
Snuffbox mussel shells are yellowish-green with many dark green rays or chevrons. There is ribbing on the posterior ridge. It grows to 2.5 inches in length. This species lives in clear gravel riffles of medium to large rivers. It is present in all of Illinois except the northeastern corner. Conservation status: Endangered in Illinois. Taxonomy: Order Unionoida, Superfamily Unionidea, Family Unionidae, Subfamily Lampsilinae.
