Alasmidonta marginata (Elktoe)
The elktoe mussel has a bright, yellowish green shell with darker green rays and spots. The shape is elongate and triangular.The umbos are large and centrally elevated. It grows to four inches in length. This species lives in the gravel or mixed sand and gravel of medium-sized streams. In Illinois it occurs throughout the northern two-thirds of the state. Conservation status: widespread but sporadically distributed Taxonomy: Order Unionoida; Superfamily Unionoidea; Family Unionidae; Subfamily Anodontinae
