Smallmouth Buffalo (Ictiobus bubalus) is a large river species (up to 40 pounds) that spawns in backwater lakes. The elimination of its breeding areas has reduced its numbers. This species is native to the central section of the United States. It grows as large as 32" (78cm) long and can live 15 years.
The buffalo is a bottom-feeder and moves around to find food rather than staying in one area as does the catfish. It is found in flowing streams and in deeper water in lakes and sloughs.
