Illinois River Waterfowl Species
The Illinois River Basin is part of the Mississippi Flyway, over which millions of ducks and geese migrate north in the spring and south in the late fall. The river's habitat and food supply attract large numbers even today, although not the dark clouds of ducks described by early settlers.
Ducks are categorized by their feeding habits into diving ducks and dabbling ducks. Seven species that are important prey of duck hunters are pictured and described in this section.
