- An Interdisciplinary Study of Illinois Wetlands -
- American Lotus - Illinois wetlands - their geologic formation, biological diversity, and ecological and cultural significance - were the focus of study in An Interdisciplinary Study of Illinois Wetlands, the Illinois State Museum's Scientific Literacy program. Scientists, museum educators, and elementary-level teachers of grades five through eight were united statewide in the process of building a viable system for educational exchange and professional growth. Wetlands across Illinois provided a variety of unique "outdoor classrooms" as teachers placed emphasis on field work and an understanding of the scientific method as a critical foundation for science learning. A key component of the program was the development of an electronic network for communication and data sharing among all participants.

This three year staff development program was funded through the Illinois State Board of Education. The interdisciplinary nature of the program integrated the disciplines of language arts, geology, zoology, botany, archeology, history, and visual and performance arts, and included the study of current social and environmental issues concerning wetlands conservation and management.
