Students really got "into" the dirt as they studied wetland soil.

- Soil Sampling (Amboy) - Amboy Junior High students watch as a soil sample is collected at the Lyle Reuter Farm.

- Identifying Wetland Plants (Washington) - Students from Washington School in Champaign identify wetland plants at Koberline Farm, Tolono.

Students from Peacock Junior High (above) identify wetland plants at Spring Brook Nature Center.

- Fossil Hunting (McMillan) - This group from McMillan School is looking along the river bank for evidence of Pennsylvanian plant fossils at Forest Glen Nature Preserve.

Many students got their feet wet as they collected macroinvertebrates for study and identification.

- Studying Wetlands (May) - Students from May School in Rochelle study Jay Meiners Wetland at Nachusa Grasslands in northwestern Illinois.

- Water Sampling (Auburn) - Auburn Elementary School student collects a water sample from Lake Taylorville.

Students watched for other animals...

- Birdwatching (Edison) - Students from Edison Elementary School bird watching at Kennekuk Cove Marsh.

- Signs of Life (Beach) - Beach Elementary School students at Volo Bog look for signs of life in the cold waters.

...and found numerous examples of animal habitation on their field trips.

- Scat (Athens) - Scat found by students from Athens Middle School on a trip to Chautauqua Lake.

- Casting Animal Tracks (Rock Falls) - Students from Rock Falls Middle School stop to make plaster casts of animal tracks found along the access to Jay Meiners wetland.

- Plaster Cast (Edison) - A student from Edison Elementary School shows off a plaster cast he made of an animal track.

- Finding Evidence of Beavers (Sugar Creek) - Sugar Creek Elementary School students discovered evidence of beavers at Chautauqua Lake.

- Insect Shelter (Ward) - Insect shelter found at the Cache River by students from Ward Middle School.

Students take a break from observing and collecting to write down their thoughts on wetlands and do some sketching of the wetlands environment.

- Students Writing (VIT) - Students from VIT Junior High School, Table Grove, at Argyle State Park.

- Solo Time (May) - While visiting Jay Meiners Wetland, this student from May School in Rochelle takes advantage of the beautiful scenery at Nachusa Grasslands to compose his thoughts about the environment.

Students worked with clay as they learned how Native Americans made use of wetland resources.

- Making Effigy Pots (Jerseyville) - Students from Jerseyville County make animal effigy pots while visiting Kampsville, Illinois.

A lot of the learning which took place during the field trips was fun, especially during games.

- Predator Game (Gallatin) - While visiting Yellow Slough, students from Gallatin County School play a predator game to learn about the food chain.
