Archaic people took advantage of natural shelters, and they also built shelters. Throughout the Archaic period people took shelter beneath an overhang of sandstone rock located near the small town of Modoc, in Randolph County, Illinois. But Archaic people mostly built shelters. At the Koster site, archaeologists found evidence of a Middle Archaic building constructed with large support posts. Late Archaic buildings were also built with upright saplings and perhaps covered with reed mats. Animal skin tents and lean-tos made with sticks may have been used for temporary shelters on overnight trips.
