Physicians-in-training (residents) can lose compassion for, and understanding of, their patients as residents attempt to master their chosen profession.To combat this lack of understanding and compassion, resident physicians at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine participated in an interactive poverty simulation designed to: (a) teach them the issues facing people living in poverty, (b) help them understand the issues that prevent patients from being compliant, and (c) help them become more compassionate toward the poor and poverty-stricken.
