In 1974, while hand-digging a well, excavators discovered larger-than-life-size terracotta warriors near Xi'an China. Further excavations revealed an enormous burial vault with an estimated 7,000 warriors, chariots, and horses, the sheer size of which is testimony to the power of China's first emperor and the resources of his dynasty. In 1982, Dr. Wiant viewed this amazing archaeological discovery first hand and acquired a rare set of slides that illustrate this remarkable cultural treasure. Further excavation and recent analysis shed new light on the circumstances leading to the creation and preservation of this cultural treasure. The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, in partnership with the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Bureau Relics Bureau, Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion Center, and Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum of the People's Republic of China, currently features an exhibit titled "China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors," which will be on view from through January 8, 2017.
