Brownbag Lectures: Botanical Studies in the Illinois Ozarks, Rare Plants, Pollinators, and Prairies
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, May 06, 2015, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Presented by William E. McClain
Three species of the plant genus Phemeranthus occur in Illinois and two of these, P. calycinus and P. rugospermus, are present in the Illinois Ozarks. Both are rare plants whose pollinators are unknown. Population and pollinator studies of these two plants began last year. Two prairie types, xeric limestone prairie and loess hill prairie, share species with these communities in other states, but the Illinois communities appear to be more diverse. Both the rare plant populations and the prairies require management to maintain the sites.
