Paul Mickey Science Series: Jenkins Lot 2014 Excavations: Digging in Lincoln's Neighborhood
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2015, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by Dennis Naglich, Research Associate in Anthropology, Illinois State Museum
Last June, archaeologists from the Illinois State Museum excavated an additional 2.5 square meters of area in the northwestern corner of the Jameson Jenkins lot at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield. Jameson Jenkins was an African-American wagon driver who lived one block south of Abraham Lincoln and was involved with the Underground Railroad in 1850. Excavations in 2013 and 2014 were directed at defining the footprint of the small mid-19th-century house that was occupied by the Jenkins family and recovering a sample of domestic refuse from the Jenkins family occupation.
