Paul Mickey Science Series: The Gray Fossil Site and Beyond

  • Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, January 14, 2015, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Presented by Dr. Blaine Schubert, Director of the Center of Excellence in Paleontology, East Tennessee State University

Begin the New Year by learning about something really old!

The Gray Fossil Site is located near the community of Gray in northeastern Tennessee and has revealed the largest and best-preserved terrestrial localities known in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River dating from the Late Miocene to Early Pliocene (circa 7-4.5 million years ago). Excavations have revealed a unique forested ecosystem that was preserved within an ancient sinkhole. Well-preserved fossils include ancient plants, a large assemblage of tapirs, and a new species of red panda, as well as elephant, rhinoceros, short-faced bear, saber-toothed cat, alligator, fish, frogs, and turtles. Since 2007, East Tennessee State University has operated a museum and research center at the site. Dr. Schubert oversees these operations at the Gray Fossil Site and will discuss the site and evolutionary details about some of the animals that have been discovered there.
