Brownbag Lectures: Island Dwarfs and Impossible Giants, The Fossil Elephants of Greece
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, October 08, 2014, 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
Presented by Chris Widga, PhD, Associate Curator of Geology, Illinois State Museum
Greece and the Aegean Islands have a rich and diverse record of extinct elephants. From the current world-record holders for the longest tusks (>5 m)--the Milia mastodons--to the diminuitive dwarf elephants that occupied the Island of Tilos until ~6000 years ago, the Grecian record is one of extremes. Chris will discuss sites and scenes from the 2014 Mammoth Conference, where the group traveled throughout the country, exploring its fossil past.
