Paul Mickey Science Series: The Louis Blanchette Site: A Circa-1770 French-Canadian Settlement in Missouri
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, July 09, 2014, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by Dr. Steve J. Dasovich (Lindenwood University, St. Charles, Missouri)
Old living floors for two buildings have been identified at the French Colonial Louis Blanchette Site in St. Charles, Missouri, which dates to around 1770. Based upon artifacts associated with these surfaces, one building has been tentatively associated with Louis Blanchette, the founder of the City of St. Charles, whereas the second building may have been occupied by Blanchette’s successor, Don Carlos Tayon, beginning in 1793. While neither floor has been completely excavated, significant information is available to discuss the general shape and possible functions of these buildings, one of which includes a double stone hearth located at the base of a sloped floor. Information about this urban site location just north of St. Louis will be presented along with some new information regarding the identification of French colonial ceramics at the site.
