Paul Mickey Science Series: LaSalle's Lasting Legacy in the Illinois Country
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, February 12, 2014, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by Mark Walczynski, Starved Rock Educational and Historical Foundation; Illinois Valley Community College
The legacy of French explorer RenJ de La Salle is alive and well in today’s Illinois. From the Great Lakes, and hence Canada and the Atlantic, to the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico, La Salle’s vision of commerce and trade has been realized. This presentation will examine the foundations of the Illinois trade at Fort Saint Louis, a French post established by La Salle that was located on the summit of today’s Starved Rock between 1683 and 1691. Some of La Salle’s writings will also be reviewed to see how Illinois’ strategic geographical location, abundant natural resources, and waterways combined to make Illinois the commercial and agricultural leader it is today.
