SPRINGFIELD, IL – The next Illinois State Museum Paul Mickey Science Series lecture on December 12, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. will feature Dr. Ronald K. Faulseit of Tulane University, Visiting Scholar at the Center for Archaeological Investigations of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Dr. Faulseit will present Maya 2012: The Calendar and Astronomy of an Ancient Culture. NOTE: The monthly program will be held at the Illinois State Museum, 502 S. Spring Street. The public is invited to this free program.

The end of the Mayan “Great Cycle” (December 21, 2012) is fast approaching, and with it there are many predictions of disaster and/or transformation. This presentation will consider some of these proposed scenarios and discuss what the Maya themselves wrote (and are still writing) about their calendar.

This program coincides with the Old Capitol Holiday Walk, sponsored by Downtown Springfield, Inc. The Museum Store will be open from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. for holiday shopping. Visitors to the Museum Store can get a card validated for entry into the Downtown Holiday Gift Certificate giveaway.

The Illinois State Museum promotes discovery, learning, and an appreciation of Illinois’ natural, cultural, and artistic heritage. The Museum’s extensive collections and research activities provide the foundation for exhibitions and public programs that tell the story of the land, life, people, and art of Illinois. The Illinois State Museum is located at 502 S. Spring Street (the corner of Spring and Edwards Streets) in Springfield, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday.  Admission is free.  Parking is available nearby, and the building is ADA accessible.
