Super Saturdays at the Museum: The Secret Life of Prairies

Before Illinois grew corn and soybeans, tallgrass prairie covered most of the state. Join us for Super Saturday on July 12! Discover the hidden treasures in Illinois’ prairies, learn through play, and explore the wonders that created the fertile farming soil we know today.

Encounter engaging activities as we make our way through the Illinois prairie! Children will get the chance to measure themselves next to some very tall prairie plants such as the big blue stem, switch grass, and the compass plant – which can be up to 10 feet tall! Embellish a life-size prairie mural by creating and adding butterflies and flowers. Hear the winds of the prairie by designing a wind chime using found objects such as keys, nuts, bolts and more. Also, make your favorite pollinating insect with wire antennas and coffee filter wings. Play, learn, smile and create every Super Saturday!

Bring the whole family to Super Saturdays at the Illinois State Museum! Super Saturdays are held the 2nd Saturday of each month from 11am-3pm and offer free, thematic activities recommended for children ages 3-8. Activities take 30 to 45 minutes to complete and feature crafts and educational games. Parents and families are encouraged to participate. Registration is not required for this activity.
