Paul Mickey Science Series: The Big Deal about Big Game: Early Paleoindian Use of Pleistocene Megafauna
- Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, May 08, 2013, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by Dr. Chris Widga, Assistant Curator of Geology, Illinois State Museum
Early Paleoindians hunted the last of the Pleistocene megafauna to extinction . . . or did they? Traditional perspectives of early Paleoindian subsistence strategies emphasize a specialization on big game. However, assemblage-level zooarchaeological and taphonomic patterns are often more complex, suggesting that a more nuanced interpretation of Paleoindian subsistence is required. The evidence for early Paleoindian hunting throughout the continent will be reviewed, and many of the proposed scenarios for how Paleoindians utilized large fauna will be evaluated. Discover Illinois' rich prehistoric and historic past by attending an ISM Paul Mickey Science Series Program. A different speaker and topic are featured each month. Program will be held at the Illinois State Museum Research and Collections Center, 1011 East Ash Street, in Springfield. Access to the building is from 10 1/2 Street.
