Paul Mickey Science Series: Between Two Rivers

  • Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, April 10, 2013, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

*** TO BE HELD IN THE THORNE DEUEL AUDITORIUM AT THE ILLINOIS STATE MUSEUM, 502 SOUTH SPRING STREET (SPRING & EDWARDS STREETS)

Between Two Rivers – a documentary film about Cairo, Illinois, is presented by the Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights and the Illinois Commission on the Elimination of Poverty

Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, Cairo is a historic town with a dark and troubled past. Multiple factors have lead to Cairo’s rise and fall, from booming river-trade and juke-joints to mob-lynchings and race riots. Cairo’s tumultuous past is cast against the latest crisis to afflict the community: the record-breaking floods of the spring of 2011, when the rising Ohio and Mississippi Rivers threatened to destroy the town, forcing an emergency evacuation. The documentary was filmed, edited, and directed by Jacob Cartwright and Nick Jordan and offers insights into a community struggling with severe economic, social, and environmental pressures. Original cinematography and candid interviews are combined with archive footage, unseen for over 40 years.

Following the film, there will be a brief question and answer period, with a panel including Senator Donne Trotter; Robert Swenson, Architect and Heritage & Preservation Consultant, and Associate Professor Emeritus at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Architecture; Bishop Derek Eurales, a current Cairo resident; and Gordon Pruett, editor at Southern Illinois University and former editor of the Shawnee Classics Series at SIU Press.

Admission is free, but tickets must be picked up in the lobby of the Museum, the evening of the program only, as seating is limited to 180.
