Paul Mickey Science Series Lecture: Maya 2012: The Calendar and Astronomy of an Ancient Culture
Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Springfield
Date: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Dr. Ronald K. Faulseit of Tulane University, Visiting Scholar at the Center for Archaeological Investigations of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will present Maya 2012: The Calendar and Astronomy of an Ancient Culture.
The end of the Mayan "Great Cycle" (December 21, 2012) is fast approaching, and with it there are many predictions of disaster and/or transformation. This presentation will consider some of these proposed scenarios and discuss what the Maya themselves wrote (and are still writing) about their calendar. Attendees will also learn how the ancient Mayan calendar works, how we correlate it with our own Gregorian calendar, and how the Maya employed it to track the motions of Venus in the Dresden Codex.
PLEASE NOTE: The December program will be held in the Thorne Deuel Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum, 502 S. Spring Street.
