On & Of Paper: Selections from the Illinois State Museum Collections
Paper, with its various weights, surfaces, and grades, has for centuries served as a versatile and readily available material for the artist. Paper is a core element, whether it be folded, molded, painted, torn, glued, or otherwise altered to create the finished piece. Paper serves as a support; its texture, weave, and color contribute significantly to the final image. Paper plays a critical role in the creative process, too, offering a surface on which to sketch and test. It is not surprising, thus, that artists would turn to paper again and again. The works in this exhibition vary by era of creation, method of production, purpose, artist, and subject, yet they are linked by a single feature: paper. Every object is either ON paper (prints, drawings, photographs) or OF paper (constructions, papier mâche, collages, book projects) expanding the scope of this portion of the museum’s collections from works “on” paper to works “on and of” paper. This exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to view a number of works in a variety of media that have come into the museum’s collections, including rarely seen objects and new acquisitions.
