Dickson Mounds Museum is hosting “Be an Archaeologist for a Day” for kids ages 9-16 years old on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.  Kids will work side by side with professional archaeologists and learn excavation and artifact identification techniques, and how to process finds.  The program will begin with hands-on preparatory activities indoors, and then, weather permitting, will be held outdoors for the afternoon. 
 
The program fee is $2 for Illinois State Museum Society members and $4 for non-members per child.  Registration is required with a deadline of Friday, April 5, 2013.  Space is limited with a maximum of 12 participants.  Each participant is required to provide his/her own sack lunch, drink, and snacks, and must dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor work.  Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America encouraged to participate as this program may fulfill some badge requirements.  

Dickson Mounds Museum is offering a new monthly program series for parents and their young children in 2013.  Formerly known as “Fun for Moms & Tots,” Tot Time: Fun for Tots & Big People will be held on the first Thursday of each month at 9:30am.  Some activities may be held outside weather permitting.  On May 2, 2013 the program will focus on flowers.  The craft project includes using a photo of the tot provided by the parent.  Activities will be held at the Museum’s Picnic Shelter weather permitting. 

Admission is free and registration is not required.  Participants should dress appropriately for the outdoors. Find out more ...

On Thursday, May 16^th, The Nature Conservancy’s Tharran Hobson will discuss the rare birds that have returned to the area since the Emiquon restoration project began in 2007.  Over 90% of Illinois Threatened or Endangered wetland related bird species and over 60% of all Threatened or Endangered bird species have been recorded in the Emiquon Preserve.  The size and variety of habitat at the Preserve remains a beacon for several bird species.  The area has become an important migration route and nesting destination for birds.
