Brad H. Koldehoff, Chief Archaeologist at the Illinois Department of Transportation and a research associate at the Illinois State Museum and Illinois State Archaeological Survey, will present the talk “Ancient Buried Cities in Illinois: Recent Excavations at Meredosia and East St. Louis” at the Wednesday, June 3, 2015, meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum. This lecture is free and the public is invited to attend the lecture and the refreshments following.
At Meredosia on the banks of the Illinois River in Morgan County and at East St. Louis on the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Clair County, large-scale excavations completed by Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) personnel have uncovered the remnants of ancient native settlements. Undertaken in advance of Illinois Department of Transportation bridge projects, ISAS excavators, at both locations, recovered important new information about the ancient history of Illinois. Hidden beneath the present-day community of Meredosia, dozens of Middle Woodland, Late Woodland, and pre-Civil War era habitation features were excavated. Hidden beneath the present-day community of East St. Louis, thousands of Mississippian habitation features were excavated, along with the documentation and preservation of an earthen mound remnant and associated human burials and borrow pits.
