Edgar Lee Masters Program Series: Understanding Illinois Burial Grounds and Cemeteries

Edgar Lee Masters Program Series: Understanding Illinois Burial Grounds and Cemeteries

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Saturday, June 13, 2015, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Dickson Mounds Museum is hosting a presentation and walk-n-talk cemetery program as part of the 100th Anniversary of the Spoon River Anthology program series. The presentation will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2015 beginning at the Lewistown Visitor Center at 1:00 pm.

Cemeteries are places with specific above ground visual and material features including graves, grave markers, landscaping, fences, and a recognizable spatial arrangement. The placement and arrangement of these items reflect specific choices and provides insight into how people structured and ordered their social and physical landscape. Because cemeteries are dynamic they also reflect changing cultural and social values. Understanding these visual characteristics and their changes through time provides a deeper meaning of what is represented in burial grounds and cemeteries. This knowledge, and respecting the laws that protect them, will ensure their preservation for the future.

The program will be presented by Hal Hassen, Archaeologist, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Dawn Cobb, Physical Anthropologist, Illinois State Museum. The program will begin with a presentation at the Lewistown Visitor Center at 1:00 p.m. Participants will then walk or drive their own vehicles to the Oak Hill Cemetery for the remainder of the program. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Registration is not required.

The Illinois State Museum - Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.
