Dr. Michael Conner, Curator of Archaeology, will present a talk titled: “The History, Theory, and Application of Carbon 14 Dating” at the Wednesday, March 4, 2015 meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum. This lecture is free and the public is invited to attend.
Radiocarbon dating represents the most significant advance in archaeology of the 20th century. Developed in the 1950s, it allowed archaeologists to establish the absolute age of material used by modern humans over the last 50,000 years. This talk will explore the history and early development of carbon 14 dating, look at modern techniques that have made the technique even more useful, and discuss real-world examples of the application of dating.
