Illinois Valley Archaeological Society Lecture: An Ancient Cemetery on Kingfisher Hill

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Wednesday, February 04, 2015, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Michael Wiant will present a talk titled: “An Ancient Cemetery on Kingfisher Hill” at the Wednesday, February 4, 2015 meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. This lecture is free and the public is invited to attend. This lecture was postponed from January due to bad weather.

Archaeological discoveries made more than 50 years ago are often forgotten or overlooked, but there is value in re-reading reports and reconsidering objects. In 1934, Noten Wiseman excavated the crown of what is known as Kingfisher Hill near Oakford, on the edge of the Sangamon River Valley. Naturally, his discovery was viewed according to contemporary understanding. Today, the discovery is seen in a different light and illuminates the relationship between the site on Kingfisher Hill and the Havana site.

The Illinois State Museum—Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations. For more information call 309.547.3721 or TTY 217.782.9175 or visit the museum's web site at www.ExperienceDicksonMounds.com.
