IVAS Lecture Series: Shadows of the Past: The Results of Remote Sensing Surveys at Morton Village

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Wednesday, May 07, 2014, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Please Note — Presenter and topic change due to a scheduling conflict.

Due to a scheduling conflict the May 7, 2014 presenter will now be Dr. Michael Conner, Curator, Dickson Mounds Museum. He will present a talk titled: “Shadows of the Past: The Results of Remote Sensing Surveys at Morton Village” at the Wednesday meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. This talk is free and the public is invited to attend.

Morton Village was occupied by prehistoric Native Americans during the 1300s. In addition to extensive excavations by Dickson Mounds Museum and Michigan State University, a large area of the site has been surveyed using a magnetometer, which can detect the presence of prehistoric houses and pits without excavation. The latest survey was just completed at the end of April. Dr. Michael Conner of Dickson Mounds will discuss the results of the surveys and excavations, focusing on what they tell us about how people were organized at the site and how they were distributed on the landscape around the village.

The Illinois State Museum—Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations. For more information call 309.547.3721 or TTY 217.782.9175 or visit the museum's web site at www.ExperienceDicksonMounds.com.
