Illinois Valley Archaeological Society Lecture Series

Illinois Valley Archaeological Society Lecture Series

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Wednesday, March 05, 2014, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Mr. Robert Mazrim, Illinois State Archaeological Survey, will present a lecture titled: Archaeological Reflections of the American Frontier in Illinois 1815-1840 at the Wednesday, March 5, 2014 meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. This lecture is free and the public is invited to attend.

American settlement expanded into central Illinois just after the close of the War of 1812. For the next generation, ancient woodlands and prairies were rapidly transformed into the agriculture landscape that is still familiar today. At the same time, Native American populations were pushed westward, and their traditional practices shattered. Although the resulting frontier-era American settlements were often composed of crude, neo-medieval log dwellings, they were stocked with a wide range of surprisingly fashionable and modern goods, which today are recovered as archaeological artifacts at the sites of these long-vanished communities.

Robert Mazrim currently serves as Historic Resources Specialist at the Illinois State Archaeological Survey. He has practiced historical archaeology in Illinois for over twenty years, and is the author of four books and numerous articles about the colonial and frontier cultural landscapes of the Midwest.

The Illinois State Museum—Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.
