Family Programs at Dickson Mounds Museum: Stories and Music from the Dust Bowl Days

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Saturday, October 19, 2013, 1:00 PM - 9:30 PM

As part of the Spoon River Reads project, Dickson Mounds Museum and the Fulton County Arts Council are hosting a day of family programs at Dickson Mounds Museum on Saturday, October 19, 2013.  At 1:00 pm, join storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis as he travels the back roads of America, meets the folks who built this country and hear the stories and songs sung by the Oakies. Putting Steinbeck’s work into the broader context of America’s migration west, hear the tales of the first sod busting prairie farmers and the tunes of the wagon trains heading west.

Troubadour and professor Bucky Halker and singer-songwriter Chris Vallillo will present “Woody Guthrie and the Dust Bowl Era” at 2:00 pm in the Museum’s Discovery Center.  Kids will have fun learning about the Great Depression as they sing-a-long to the songs of the era.  Bucky Halker will also perform at 7:30 pm in the Museum’s auditorium, as part of the Hickory Ridge Concert Series.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed for the afternoon programs.  Guests will be charged $5 for adults and $3 for children under the age of 12 for the Hickory Ridge Concert Series performance.  These programs are a collaborative effort between Dickson Mounds Museum, the Fulton County Arts Council, and the Spoon River Reads project.  The Fulton County Arts Council is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The Illinois State Museum - Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97.  The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.  Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations.  For more information call 309.547.3721 or TTY 217.782.9175 or visit the museum's web site at www.experiencedicksonmounds.com.  Remember to *Like* Illinois State Museum-Dickson Mounds on Facebook.
