Illinois Valley Archaeological Society Lecture: Why Museums Matter

Illinois Valley Archaeological Society Lecture: Why Museums Matter

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Wednesday, March 06, 2013, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Dr. Jonathan Reyman, Curator of Anthropology at the Illinois State Museum Research and Collection Center, will be the guest presenter at the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Dickson Mounds Museum auditorium.  The public is welcome and there is no charge.

A museum, broadly defined, is a building or place where objects of significant value are kept and displayed. Museums have existed for more than 2,000 years, so surely they must matter as cultural institutions.

But why do museums matter? Part of the reason is they provide us with records of our past and those of other peoples, which further our understanding of ourselves. These records also provide information – clues – to our future; by understanding our past, we can chart our present and future behavior so as to avoid past mistakes. Furthermore, the materials held by museums can help us to answer questions about the past and present, assist and inform our research, generate intellectual conversations, build bridges to native communities and other groups, and entertain.

This presentation reviews the different types of museums, why they are important, how they build social and cultural relationships, and why they are worthy of public support.

The Illinois State Museum Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations.
