Eagle Day Festival

Dickson Mounds Museum is the location for a day-long Eagle Day Festival on Saturday, February 2, 2013.  This event, which is co-sponsored by the Fulton County Arts Council, the Mason County Arts Council, The Nature Conservancy, the Havana Library District, Lewistown Chamber, Illinois History Survey­Forbes Biological Station and Illinois River Biological Station, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is free to the public.
 
Two special exhibits will be on display: the Illinois Winter Wildlife Photography Show which is open to residents in Fulton and Mason Countries, and Eagle Art and Poetry created by students from Fulton and Mason Counties.  These exhibits will be on display until March 4th.
 
From 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. activities will be available for students in the museum’s Discovery Center.  Make a falcon mask or an Eagle hat or see if you can spread your arms as wide as an Eagles wings or any number of crafts.
 
At 10:30 a.m. visitors will enjoy a movie in the Dickson Mounds Museum’s auditorium.  Nature’s Raptor Force, a 2007 production, features stunning aerial footage and computer graphics to demonstrate how raptor’s tricks and tactics have inspired engineers to devise fighter jets with unprecedented maneuverability and stealth.  World Bird Sanctuary of Missouri will present Raptor Awareness at 1:30 p.m., a one-hour program with live birds of prey.  Admission is free, but tickets must be picked up in the lobby of the Museum for the show as seating is limited to 150.
 
At 3:00 p.m. the day at Dickson Mounds will end the Eagle Art and Poetry Awards ceremony.  Winners of this year’s competition will be honored during this ceremony.

Chautauqua Wildlife Refuge will host an auto tour around the South Pool from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.  Refuge staff will be on hand at the Headquarters to greet visitors and answer questions.
Be sure to visit the new Lewistown Visitor Center on the 2nd.  From 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.  Birds of Prey up Close presented by Wildlife Prairie Park provides an opportunity for people to see a variety of birds such as hawks, eagles, and owls.
 
The Fulton and Mason County Arts Councils will sell food for lunch, the proceeds of which will fund their respective programs.
