Amish and English
American quilts are remarkable for their variety achieved through fabrics, techniques, color, formats, and patterns. Because the Amish have sought separation from the "English," or non-Amish, world in many aspects of their lives, it is tempting to assume that their quilts were also made in isolation from larger American trends. This comparative exhibition of Amish and "English" quilts considers this analogy by pairing Amish and "English" quilts of the same era and comparing pattern, fabric, or technique. From the collection of the Illinois State Museum, this selection of Amish and "English," or non-Amish, quilts exhibited side by side reveal intereting technical comparison and aesthetic questions.
