Fiber in Bloom Ausrine Kerr Evanston, IL   Lithuanian born artisan, Ausrine Kerr, worked with leather for nearly 25 years, yet in the last decade Kerr has sought out other artistic mediums. to express her active imagination. Kerr worked with leather handcrafting everything from books, bags, albums and boxes, to leather paintings and embossing.

“The printmaking process occurs from the inside out but felting happens from outside in.[.. ] Every element in any one of my works comes together to form a whole, while maintaining an individual voice”

In Kerr’s fiber creations, she compounds color, texture and design elements of wool on top of silk using nuno and wet felting techniques. Through the process of hand stitching, she layers multiple pieces of fabric onto one another, often including leather details as well. There is a tactile energy that emanates from all of her work, a result of the intense craft that goes into them. Read more about Kerr.

A variety of Ausrine Kerr’s paper, leather and fiber works are featured at the Illinois Artisans, Chicago through the end of July, 2014. See images of the exhibition.
