March Feature: Arlene Salamendra

  • Location: Illinois Artisans, Chicago, Chicago
  • Date: Saturday, March 01, 2014 through Monday, March 31, 2014 , 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

"The Art of Story Telling" by Arlene Salamendra showcases surrealist portraits of animals and scenes. While the images look to be painted in acrylic, they are oil on canvas.

"After an early interest in surrealism, influenced by Salvador Dali, my work gradually developed into an emotional combination of realism and surrealism. Using vivid and unusual colors combined with my love of animals, each painting tells a story. Woven throughout a carefully executed plethora of details and borders is a symbolic campaign in favor of our furry, feathered and fishy friends often carried out in a humorous fashion. Though the stories are not always pleasant, they are my personal statements for the time we live in.  I also enjoy stories of human concerns and opinions that I take up as issues in our society today. Using animals to get across the message, I reflect the correlation of human and animal behavior."

Salamendra will be featured at the March Art Spree on the 13th & 14th, as well as a trunk show in the Illinois Artiasns, Chicago on March 21st.
