November Feature Window: Mary and Spencer Watson, Jewelry and Stone Sculpture

  • Location: Illinois Artisans, Chicago, Chicago
  • Date: Friday, November 01, 2013 through Saturday, November 30, 2013 , 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Mary Watson works along with her husband, Spencer, who is a sculptor, selling their work at art shows and selected galleries.

Mary's jewelry pieces are primarily fabricated using a hollow form process. She often incorporates torch fired enamel on copper or fine silver. The addition of unusual semi-precious stones and other materials (including beach stone creations by her husband) with accents of gold create beautiful and unique pieces which often function as small scale sculpture as well as jewelry.

Spence's stone creations are full of warmth, spirit and mirth! He carefully chooses each stone for its shape, size, color and texture. He then creates a hand-cut stencil and places it on the stone over the areas he wants to protect and then uses a sand-blasting process to erode away the exposed areas. The result is a simple, yet evocative sculptural form reminiscent of ancient stone artifacts found all over the earth.
