Papilio troilus (Spicebush Swallowtail)

This species of eastern swallowtail gets its common name from its larvae eating the spicebush, sassafras, and other laurels. This large swallowtail female has blue on its hind wings and one orange spot on each hindwing. This species mimics the pipevine swallowtail.

The range of this species covers the eastern half of the United States. Illinois is near the most northwest point of this range. Adults usually stay in wooded areas and fly slowly near the ground.
